About our new name: GeoMemes
Blogger:
Charles Geo (′gyō) - taken from the Greek word γη or γαια meaning "earth". Geo- is thus a prefix for many words, including:
* Geography, the study of the Earth and its features, including ecological and cultural systems
* Geodesy, also known as geodetics, the study of the measurement and representation of the earth
Memes (/mi:m/, rhymes with dreams, teams and ice-creams) - [thank-you Richard Dawkins] - any unit of cultural information, such as a practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another. Examples include thoughts, ideas, theories, habits, songs, and, of course, ways to make and use maps.
Examples of geomemes:
- Projection of the world (a sphere) onto a paper map (plane)
- Webmapping (Google, Yahoo) basemaps with user crowd-sourced data (mash-ups)
- Virtual globes with multi-touch map controls
- Location-tagged data (text, audio, video) made available to ALL your staff and community, not just the GIS department (that's what GeoMemes' CIS systems do!)
