Communities We Give Back To
Open Source
Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in.
Here at GeoMemes we are great believers in open-source and regularly contribute code, reviews and patches back to the community. Here are some open-source projects we helped author. You can download and use these tools for free:
- Drupal OpenLayers The Drupal OpenLayers project creates a set of modules that integrates the OpenLayers JS library with Drupal. It provides a set of features and functionality that allow users to create dynamic and unique looking maps on their site.
- URL Fill A Drupal module that allows you to fill fields from the URL. There are options to allow / disallow overriding pre-existing values, hiding a field if it is filled from the URL, and a few other goodies.
- Spatial Tools A motley collection of useful spatial tools for Drupal. Allows for Shapefile uploads, among other useful tidbits.
- Geo Allows Drupal to inter-operate with spatial-databases such as PostGIS.
- Context Links (lc) Formats context aware links for Drupal.
- Geobrowser A first-generation mapping solution for Drupal. Allows the creation of maps from location aware content.

Not For Profit Institutions
Community Mapping Initiative, Geography, University of Victoria
The Community Mapping Resource Initiative (CMI), is a community-university project involving the University of Victoria's Geography Department, Green Map System (New York), and Geomemes Research Inc. The CMI is a key node in the Common Ground Community Mapping Network, and houses archival material from past local community mapping projects, including reports and images from 10+ years of Common Ground work.
Ecoforestry Institute
The Ecoforestry Institute Society is dedicated to promoting ecologically, socially and economically responsible forest use that maintains and restores the complexity and diversity of our forests. Geomemes provides pro-bono technical support and development resources to this great organization. Check out http://www.ecoforestry.ca to learn more about them.
Runners of Compassion
Runners of Compassion is a non-profit society whose members participate as a group in fund-raising and volunteer activities, in order to provide support to a variety of charitable causes, organizations and non-traditional groups. Our Vision: A strong and aware society that provides compassion and support while promoting tolerance, inclusion and kindness. Our Mission: To capture and utilize the energy and commitment of runners in a manner that positively contributes to the betterment of our local and global communities.
Vancouver Island Spine
The Vancouver Island “Spine” is a proposed trail from Victoria in the south to Cape Scott at the northern tip of the Island. The route is an inland route that passes near many communities, yet retains its wilderness character, following historic routes and completed trails where they exist.
Approximately 700km long, the “VISpine” is an adventure opportunity that will provide a recreational route for residents and tourists through the beautiful back country of Vancouver Island. Primarily a hiking trail (but permitting non-motorized, multi-use where appropriate) the route traces mountain ridges, through forests and past lakes, similar to many successful long-distance routes in North America.
Compute Power

GeoMemes donates it's spare processor cycles to the World Community Grid. So far we have donated 29,348 CPU-hours of compute time to researchers fighting AIDS, MS, and cancer.
