Worskhops & Presentations

GeoMemes staff have given the following recent workshops and presentations:

Saturday 20th March 2010 @ ICT Summit
Hands-On Drupal Workshop 2: "Adding Maps to Your Site"
Led by Patrick Hayes, Charles Burnett & Neskie Manuel

In this 1.5 hour workshop technically-minded conference delegates had a chance to continue building their Drupal-based mock community website website. This second part of the workshop focused on how to view the image nodes on a custom map. Users first created the custom basemap (a Drupal OpenLayers 'pre-set') and then overlaid nodes using the Views module.

Hands-On Drupal Workshop 1: "Making Image Galleries"
Led by Neskie Manuel & Patrick Hayes
In this 1.5 hour workshop technically-minded conference delegates had a chance to build a Drupal-based website from start to finish. The workshop focused on the creation of a slick image upload system and gallery for each participants community. Drupal is free and open source software (FOSS). The Drupal content management system is is an exciting tool for small communities; all you need is an old computer to play with. We discussed image processing (resizing), categories and permissions. Copies of the software were handed out after the workshop on a fully functional (boot-able) USB flash drive: participants took home their work!

"Community-Based Health: Services Integration Using Open Source Software and Maps"
Presented by Charles Burnett (UVic Geography, GeoMemes)
Demo of an integrated health IT solution based on free and open software followed by a discussion of health information requirements with an emphasis on supporting individual, group and community health initiatives. In this presentation we'll be showing off some innovative research and health mapping tools that are available to communities now, and which are relatively inexpensive. These include: support for asset mapping, exercise program tracking like pedometer challenges, health asset tracking, emergency planning, and online surveys with automatic report generation.

"Mmm! Maps, File Management, and Multimedia: Getting Free and Open Source Software Working for Your Community"
Presented by: Charles Burnett (Geography Dept, UVic) & Patrick Hayes (GeoMemes)
In this talk, we demonstrated how a free and open-source software data management system can serve three parts of a community: (1) maps and multimedia files are available to teachers at the Elementary-Secondary School to build lessons on culture and language; (2) maps and ecological data are available to the Stewardship Office to coordinate monitoring programs; and (3) communication tracking and map reports are used by the Stewardship Office to manage consultation, including referrals, and produce automated reports. We demo-ed a live (demo) First Nations system, with map data coming from the University of Victoria , and the North Coast-Skeena First Nations Stewardship Society (NCSFNSS).

Monday 15th March 2010 @ BCRRHRN Workshop, Port Hardy, BC
"Community-Based Health Research with Maps - By the People, For Healthy Communities"
Facilitated by Charles Burnett (Geography Dept, UVic) and Fiona Lawson (VIHA)
12 community health researchers from Vancouver Island and as far away as Blue River, BC, joined us for a full day of exploring do-it-yourself (DIY) research methods and tools. These methods/tools were grouped into: icebreakers, data collection, data analysis and data re-representation. And we spent a few hours in the afternoon looking at Web 2.0 opportunities for health information sharing. Funding for this free workshop was provided by the BC Rural and Remote Health Research Network, and by the Vancouver Island Health Authority.
