University Community Map System

Client:
University of Victoria
Year Completed:
2008

A two year initiative of UVic Sustainability and Planning and the UVic Office of Community Based Research, the University of Victoria Community Green Map (UVicCGM) is a participatory mapping and planning system used to facilitate innovative and sustainable development at the University of Victoria.

The UVicCGM is the cornerstone of the UVic Community Mapping Centre, a partnership between the Common Ground Community Mapping Project (www.commongroundproject.ca) and the Department of Geography.

The map and accompanying multi-user website is designed so that students and staff can share information about community mapping and community mapping projects. The site's mandate is to:

  • Host the UVic Campus Green Map (Web Map)
  • Support the teaching of community mapping on and off campus
  • Provide experiential learning opportunities for UVic students
  • Support extra-UVic community efforts to create maps of local assets and visions
  • Support sustainability planning on the UVic campus

Students and staff have contributed over 400 green sites to the UVicCGM and the site has over a 100 user accounts. New maps are added every semester on thematic areas such as restoration, community art and indigenous spaces.
